Thus far, Jodi has two degrees, one in Art Education K-12, and another in Studio Arts with an emphasis in drawing and painting. Having been an educator in many various manifestations since her late teens, and sharing with others what she loves is paramount to her existence. She taught in Minneapolis Public Schools, instructing 2D Art at Southwest High School, the largest high school in Minnesota, and at Emerson Spanish Immersion Learning Center, teaching middle school art, as well as serving as their Gifted & Talented and Fine Arts Coordinator. Jodi wrote many grants for the school and arranged numerous artist residencies for all students, K-8.
More recently, she's taught art to small groups of kids, varying in age from 7-12, in her home and back yard. For many summers they have had many themes, working one day a week, from 9-5. The first year, there was a different animal to research and make art about per session. The next summer, was explored a different mythological creature every week. Another year, the curriculum was the history of Rock and Roll, covering Elvis and Sister Rosetta Tharpe, all the way up to Queen, shooting for 5 musicians, or bands, each week. While they created, they listened to each artists music as their soundtrack, each musicians biggest hits, or their full albums. In total, Jodi came up with her own unique curriculum of over 150 projects.
Switching it up to work one-on-one with the students has been the natural progression, as they've gotten older, and their own unique interests have emerged, she has worked with them on self-directed study. After several summers of technique building, she's handing over the reigns a bit more to let them take the lead. Jodi also educates teens and adults private lessons in her home, and sometimes she teaches in others homes. In her lessons, she shares a wide variety of materials, methods, and techniques, such as drawing, painting, collage, encaustic, printmaking, design, sculpture, photo-transfer, and crafts. She takes particular delight in choosing the media that best fits the ideation for each project, for each student to engage with more fully.
During a residency in New York Mills, Jodi taught area teens on artsy field trips, where they learned about collage and mixed media processes. She also presenting her original work, and shared some prints, and finally gave an artists talk about her own studio practice and career as an artist.
