I have two degrees, one in Art Education K-12, and another in Studio Arts with an emphasis in drawing and painting. I have been an educator in many various manifestations since my late teens, and sharing with others what I love is paramount to my existence. I taught for two years in Minneapolis Public Schools. I instructed 2D Art at Southwest High School, the largest high school in our state, for one year. I spent another at Emerson Spanish Immersion School, teaching middle school art, as well as serving as their Gifted & Talented and Fine Arts Coordinator. I wrote grants for the school and arranged numerous artist residencies for all students, K-8.
More recently, I’ve taught art to small groups of kids, varying in age from 7-12, in my home and back yard. For the last three summers we have had many themes, working one day a week, from 9-5. The first year, there was a different animal to research and make art about per session. The second summer, we did a different mythological creature every week. Last year, was the history of Rock and Roll. We covered from Elvis to Queen, shooting for 5 musicians or bands per week. We listened to their music, as we made art about them, their songs, or their albums. In total, I came up with my own unique curriculum of over 150 projects.
This summer, I am switching it up to work one on one with the students, as they get older, and their own unique interests emerge, I can work with them on what they’d like to make art about. After three summers of technique building, I’m handing over the reigns a bit more to them. I also teach teens and adults private lessons in my home. In all lessons, I teach a wide variety of methods and techniques, such as drawing, painting, collage, encaustic, printmaking, design, sculpture, photo-transfer, and crafts. I try to choose the media that best fits the idea I have for each project.
Last year, during a residency in New York Mills, I taught sections of area teens on artsy field trips about collage processes. I also presented some original work, shared some prints, and gave a talk about my own studio practice and career as an artist.
